The town of Bitola makes a great base for exploring southern North Macedonia, with Lake Prespa and Pelister National Park just a short trip away. Wander through the old bazaar, explore ancient churches (legend says there were once 365 of them!), and don’t miss the Roman theatre still hosting summer concerts after 2000 years. You can explore the lake on a boat or follow the trails that wind through the canyon and along the ridge up above. You’ll walk by towering statues and grand monuments, including the enormous Alexander the Great in Macedonia Square, and stand alongside Byzantine domes, Turkish baths and neo-classical buildings. If you want to take the easy way up, just follow the asphalt road and you’ll get to a location called Middle Vodno, where this secluded church awaits. You can taste delicious food and local wine, join a wine-tasting tour, enjoy hiking and stunning lakes, and relax on the beach. Ohrid is North Macedonia’s prime destination, with its atmospheric old quarter with beautiful churches along a graceful hill, topped by a medieval castle overlooking serene, 34km-long Lake Ohrid.

Return to Skopje via Bitola where you can spend the day exploring the old town and visiting the ruins at Heraclea Lyncestic. Spend your first day exploring the old town and its many monasteries, the historic fortress overlooking the town and lake, and relaxing at the many lakeside cafes, bars, and restaurants. There’s plenty to see and do around this charming lakeside town, and I spent three days here on my first visit in 2019.

Inside the park, you’ll also find monasteries such as St. Nicholas and St. Jovan Bigorski. This is the perfect place for hiking, biking, camping, and picnicking in some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe. I visited early on a Sunday morning and had the entire site to myself for the first hour. This stunning ancient city was first built by the ancient Macedonians and is remarkably well preserved with Corinthian columns, a huge amphitheater, and intricate floor mosaics.

Ohrid deserves at least three days to explore the old town and nearby places of interest on the lake.
